WOMEN CELL OF RAJA PEARY MOHAN COLLEGE

The Indian Constitution declares Right to Equality as a Fundamental Right that includes the right to equality before law, prohibition of discrimination and equality of opportunities in matters of public employment. The Supreme Court of India in its August 13, 1997 judgement in Vishakha & Others vs. State of Rajasthan & others makes it obligatory for every employer and other responsible persons to follow the guidelines laid down by the Court and to evolve a specific policy to protect and promote gender sensitization in the workplace. Educational institutions are bound by the same directive. The court said harassment of any kind is a clear violation of women’s right to gender equality as guaranteed under Articles 14 and 15, her right to live with dignity under Article 21 and her right to work with dignity in a safe environment under Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution of India. Furthermore, the National Women’s Commission (2002) laid down

1: The Role of Educational Institutions:

2: Institutes must perform their administrative role for the security of the students.

3: Students must be given proper training in self defence.

4: Entry into educational institutions must be restricted and should be through identity cards.

5: Awareness programmes on the safety and security of students must be conducted on a regular basis.

In compliance with the mandate of the Supreme Court judgement and the guidelines laid down by the National Women’s Commission, Raja Peary Mohan College adopts this policy to protect and promote gender sensitization among staff and students of the institution. The college is committed to provide a comfortable place within the institution to work and study for all women including its academic, non-academic staff and students of the College, free from any intimidation and exploitation who fall within its jurisdiction. This was the main motivation behind setting up of Women Cell.
