Department of Zoology

Department Overview

About

After the introduction of Undergraduate Degree Courses in the College all the three Bio-Science subjects namely Zoology, Botany and Physiology were treated as a single Department named as the Department of Zoology and Biological Sciences. From the academic session 1972-73, the Department of Zoology and Biological Sciences was split up into three independent Departments and the Department of Zoology started its journey with Dr Nihar Ranjan Bardhan as the Head of the Department. From the very outset, the students of the Department showed remarkable success in academic advancement and the tradition continues even today. The Department has recently received grants under Biotechnology Branch of Department of Higher Education, Science & Technology and Biotechnology, Government of West Bengal under Biotechnology based Opportunities Offered to Science & Technology Departments (BOOST) scheme. Departmental faculty has research grants from various funding agencies such as DST, DBT and UGC. Dr. Santanu Rana has been awarded Early Career Research Award (ECRA) by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) in the year 2018-19. The Department of Zoology and Physiology has recently set-up a Research facility at the college with state of the art equipment’s for molecular biology and cell biology research.

Teaching Learning

Active learning strategies such as peer review, group discussions, book reviews, paper presentations, assignments and posters are emphasized. Learning in the field is accomplished through field based research projects on topics like wildlife biology, community ecology, environmental biology and limnology. Educational excursions to conservation sites in and around Kolkata and Hooghly districts are common. Moreover, students are also taken to various National Parks of India as an integral part of student's learning regime. Motivational Talks are organized under various student enrichment programmes to facilitate interaction of students with eminent scientists and alumni of the Department.

Capacity Building

Seminars, Workshops and Training Programmes: The Department organises regular student enrichment programs like student seminars, poster presentation, workshops, etc in diverse areas of Zoology. Students are encouraged out of the box thinking and innovations to help them dig deeper into the subject. Field trips: Various field trips are organised every year to arouse interest of students to various practical aspects of the course through in-field demonstrations. The field trips are done locally within West Bengal or nationally to various conservation sites.
