After the introduction of Undergraduate Degree Courses in the College all the three Bio-Science subjects namely Zoology, Botany and Physiology were treated as a single Department named as the Department of Zoology and Biological Sciences. From the academic session 1972-73, the Department of Zoology and Biological Sciences was split up into three independent Departments and the Department of Botany started its journey with Prof Shyama Prasad Ganguly as the Head of the Department. Later, in 1996-97 Honours course in Botany was introduced.

Besides traditional chalk and blackboard method teaching method includes power point presentation of different topic, video streaming for some topic, use of internet, whatsapp platform and LMS portal for teacher-students interaction and distribution of study materials.

Student seminars are arranged on a regular basis and certificates are issued to them. Students are also encouraged to participate in different seminars and workshop arranged by other institutions to enrich their knowledge. Long distance and local field trips are arranged as part of their syllabus regularly escorted by faculty members.
